S.t Columb - under 1800cc bangers-22/7/01
This domestic meeting for the up to & inc 1800cc bangers attracted 14 cars in total, with 225 Richie Edmunds arriving just after the start of heat 2 and only competing in the final. The only material was 111 Rusty,s mk3 cortina, the rest of the field consisted of a handful of Sierras, a few mk5 Tina's, a couple of smart capri's from 66 Spoons & 47 Marcus A' lee, a Saab 900, a Cavalier, a used Chrysler Alpine, a mk3 escort and a Volvo 340.

HEAT 1
12 cars lined up on the grid for the first heat but number 78 pulled to the centre before the start. The action was a bit lacking to start with apart from 111 Rusty taking a T bone from 77 in the east bend, then 77 went off to deliver a superb shot up the rear of the Cavalier of number 7 on the home straight before backing off completing another lap and steaming into the back of the Cavalier again putting the roof well up on the Cavalier and killing his own Volvo 340 in the process
1st 290 2nd 66 3rd 421

HEAT 2
11 cars came out with 909 pulling off this time. 290 Jay Tomkins and 124 Chris luke both delivered hits to the number 7 Cavaliers already blitzed rear end, 124 then took a pop at 290's Cortina jacking down the boot and shearing off the halfshaft causing Jay to loose a rear wheel and spin off onto the infield but 124 Chris Luke also came a cropper and sent himself backwards into the drainage hole on the infield to a cheer from myself and the rest of the crowd. Rusty was also getting stuck in with his mk3 giving 46 a shunt up the rear on the home straight
1st 406 2nd 66 sorry didn't see who was 3rd still laughing at 124 going in the hole!

THE FINAL
11 cars again, 225 Rich Edmunds may have missed the first 2 heats but he made up for it in the final, getting spun out, weighing in on 309,s rear and shunting the rear of 78 on the back straight, 78 was also a target for the well involved rusty in hellfire corner before he to was a victim of 225 Edmunds getting spun of onto the infield.
1st 406 2nd 47 3rd 66

The last race for the bangers was spin and roll, 6 cars entered 47 winning by spinning out 66 Spoons three times and 111 Rusty once, Rusty was also spun by 406 Chris Bridger and 421 who also spun Spoons. The best action came after the finish when Rusty delivered a solid T bone to the now dizzy 66 at the end of the back straight and Spoons sat there and spun the back wheels untill the tyres blew!

Numbers may have been low for this domestic meet but those who attended certainly entertained us especially 111 Rusty and 225 Rich Edmunds, with top marks to number 7 for managing to bring his trashed cavalier out for both heats and the final.

Thanks to Jon Plater for this report.

Smeatharpe - Unlimited Bangers and Caravans - 22/7/01

23 bangers were in the pits for this rearanged fixture for the bangers at Smeatharpe. Top material came from 266 Ian 'Tiggy' Meaker who brought along a Zodiac Hearse, with matching caravan, which collected best presented, but the car only pulled onto the track in the caravan race. The only other material to speak of was Bod Squads 744 Jake Carleess who had a mk3 Granada and 108 Steve Brown with a Sierra estate.

Heat 1

Very lively on lap one with everybody piling into the pit bend. Bod Squad man 469 Kenny Peters was snapped off after hitting the fence hard. 744 Jake Carlless was hit hard on the entrance to the pit bend, forcing him to lose a driveshaft. 115 Andy Bennelick took in 778 Paul May, in tur taking a package from Mays teamate 734 Kev Hooper who pulled off a decent shot. After the first and second lap action the rest of the race was very quiet with 199 Phil Powell taking the flag.

Heat 2

Heat 2 started off with 734 Kev Hooper spinning out the smart Sweeney Jag of 234 Johnny B. 71 Chris Billinger then took 555 Pete Hollis around the fence, twisting Hollis's car. 734 Kev Hooper then went and turned his Mk2 around and gave 113 Mark Grant a huge head-on , snapping the Sweeny car impressively. The reds came out for Grant who took some time getting out of his car, luckily no serious damage was done. After the restart it was very quiet with 382 Danny Hunt leading home 199 Phil Powell.

Caravan Race

The caravan race was also very entertaining with 11 cars and vans making the track. A warm round of applause saluted Meaker as he pulled his car and van onto the track. As the green flag dropped mayhem broke lose, and it was hard to see who was who!!! All of the vans finally bacme buried with 254 Richard Beere driving through every van he came across!!! 194 Alistair Buchan went on to take the flag.

A very entertaining fixture for the bangers, who played the support to the F2 English Open Championship, and Saloon Stock Cars British Championship. 734 Kev Hooper might receive a ban though, for the head on with 113 Mark Grant in heat 2.

S.t Columb - Metro Race - 8/7/01

A superb entry of 42 cars turned up for the Annual Metro Bash at Westworld, no material to speak of as they were all standard metro hatchbacks with the exception of one metro van but Best Presented Cars were 884 Kevin Smith with stunning paintwork, 323 Bender Boy's bright pink example,193 Mr Bump and 195 Colin Hambly

HEAT ONE
Saw all 42 metros line up on the start apart from 421 Chris Luke who pulled to the infield. As the geen flag dropped all hell broke loose as cars were hit and spun all around the circuit most noteable were 153 following in 66 Dave Spooner in hellfire corner, 323 Bender Boy taking a large one up the rear and 642 and 21 meeting on the nose also in hellfire corner before the red flags came out I think because of the blockage now developing on hellfire bend and all this with only 2 laps completed. 18 cars lined up for the restart car number 7 got spun out in the same place on two consecutive laps before the reds were out again after 322 lost his rear wheel entering hellfire corner. 10 cars made the second restart with dead cars littering the track 351 Steve Belfield took out 901, 182 then took out 351 and 107 Fish of the Fast Food team followed in182 in the east bend.
Only 6 finishers from 42!
1st: 997 2nd: 132 3rd 107

HEAT TWO
29 cars gridded for this one and it was almost a repeat performance as 421 again pulled to the infield before the start and as the green flag fell again chaos ruled as cars were hit and spun before 49, 129 and 351 came together in the east bend resulting in 351 rolling, bringing out the red flags all this in lap one! The restart saw 595 T bone 149 on the home straight, going into the east bend 38 Mr Kebab was jossled by 107 and 131 before he rolled in almost the same spot as 351. 10 cars for the restart. 107 Fish spun out 137, 290 Jay Tomkins spun out 210 and no sooner had 210 corrected himself 107 ran into the back of him hard backed off and then went off to run 129 into the empty 153 car then hit 149 up the rear on the far straight before 290 gave 107 a taste of his own medicine.
Only four finishers this time
1st: 406 2nd: 884 3rd: 290

THE FINAL
31 cars came out for the final, in which 153 took a hit that saw him lose his rear subframe and suspension, 210 and 107 were having their own DD on the back straight pull in and a pile up on the home straight left the track almost blocked until 595 Rob Wakeley completed the baracade only to get punched out the way by the remaining running cars on more than one lap.
1st:406 2nd:66 3rd:901

THE DD
9 mangled machines came out for the DD, 153's rear subframe now held in with chains!!! 107 Fish's car about two foot shorter than it should have been thanks to 290 Jay Tomkins and the left hand rear side supported on trolley casters!!!! As the green flag dropped 107 immediately turned round and met 153 head on killing both cars. The others came to blows on the start line with 149 ramming 643 onto the infield before T boning 66 Dave Spooner which left 643 the winner when he came back on the track.

All in all a very entertaining meeting.

A big thank you to Jon Plater for this report.
